Day 2 - Mardi Gras World & 1st Mass Rehearsal for Crescent City Festival

Day 2 started off bright and early at the hotel as we gathered for a small breakfast.  Most all of the kids are adjusting well, but of course there are a few who are still getting a hang of the slight time difference! After breakfast, we packed our bagged lunches with sandwiches, granola bars and fruit.  We prepared once again for rainy weather, but again did not have to use a single poncho or umbrella today.

By 9am, we were off to walk to Mardi Gras World. On the way there we walked along the 'Riverwalk', which, lucky for us, has a huge Convention Center to the right of it, so we conveniently walked much of the way to Mardi Gras World inside of the Center where it was nice and air-conditioned. What a blessing! Hehe. Arriving at Mardi Gras World we set our bags down and first watched a 15-minute video about the history of Mardi Gras. Learned how it started, the meaning of the colors purple, green and yellow, and also got to eat King Cake which is a tradition during Mardi Gras.

After learning a lot about the history of Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, we walked through Mardi Gras World and got to see up close actual artisans making the floats that go in the Mardi Gras Parade.  There were so many familiar floats and characters! After seeing all the different floats, we got to try on some of the Mardi Gras attire. We look good don't we?

Post tour, we got to get into the spirit of Mardi Gras ourselves by making masks!  We used about 10 colors of glitter on our masks and had so much fun creating our own. We even went LIVE FROM FACEBOOK during this activity! Before leaving Mardi Gras World, we ate lunch by the Riverwalk right by the long spanning Crescent City Connection Bridge by the Mississippi River and then were able to grab a few things if we wanted to from the gift shop. Many of us got little trinkets, or perhaps larger trinkets as remembrance of this awesome tour stop.

Next we headed back to the hotel for a little extra rest time before dinner. As we walked into the hotel we started to see other choirs had arrived from all over. Smiling as we walked through the lobby, we knew we'd meet them later on in the evening at our first Crescent City Festival rehearsal.

After our rest time, it was off to dinner at Oceana Grill. Here we started to get into the New Orleans cuisine a bit and enjoyed, a little Jambalaya, Blackened Chicken Pasta and for dessert some delicious Bread Pudding.

Next was our first rehearsal with the other 14+ choirs to practice our repertoire that we all will be singing together as one. A few choirs that are here: Chico Children's Chorus, Cantabile Youth Chorus of Silicon Valley and the Portland Youth Chorus.  Led by Cheryl Dupont, we sang with everyone, We Rise Again. Sounding gooooood. :)

Good night! Tomorrow we visit the Aquarium and go to a little New Orleans Cooking School. Yum!
