Day 7 - Exploring Herning

Today, singers had the opportunity to spend all day with their hosts from the Midvest Pigekor! Most of Ensemble spent the first part of the day attending school with their hosts. We chaperones also had the opportunity to visit Herning Gymnasium, a local high school, and learn about the differences between the Danish school system and the American school system. We also got an amazing tour of the school, which was pretty incredible! While at the school, we ran into Audrey and Nheletie, who were having lunch with their host sister in one of the many impressive, modern study spaces in the school.

Earlier in the day, the chaperones had an amazing excursion with a former choir parent from the Herning choir, Martin, who is an archaeologist. He took us to several dig sites, and showed us a few beautiful artifacts, some of which were over 9,000 years old! We learned how to identify where certain buildings would have been located based on soil color, and visited the highest point in Jutland (which is only 66 meters high…the landscape is quite different here!) Because their hosts had exams today, Maddie and Phoebe joined us for the tour, and helped Martin by holding some of the maps on this pretty windy day. Piper and Helena also joined us for a bit, with their host, who works with Martin on the dig sites! They were off to the beach after that, and played “hooky” from the school tour J.

During our free afternoon, we ran into Chloe and her host sister eating lunch at a local kebab and pizza place. We also saw Emily and Kimiyee shopping with their host, and chaperones Marisa and Suzie saw Mia and Alexa having lunch with their hosts as well. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their time exploring Herning, and getting to know the extremely hospitable singers from the Midvest Pigekor choir! We are all really looking forward to our joint concert tomorrow, where we’re sure all of the bonding time will lead to some very moving performances.
