Day 10: Surprise #2
Today was another wonderful day at camp. The campers woke up to the last movement of Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis (recommended by Mr. Brown). Breakfast consisted of sausages, eggs, toast, and cereal. Then it was time for warm-ups led by Dana, who focused on vocal recuperation after the strains of singing around the clock.
In musicianship classes, students focused on clapping rhythms, sight-reading, solfege, and dictation. Everyone has been diligently practicing Mr. Brown’s complex rhythm game.
After rehearsal, the campers enjoyed a lunch of tacos and Cabins Salt and Pepper, and Mykonos combined tables for a huge game of Jeopardy with Counselor Owen. Spirit day was “Dress Like a Staff Member Day.” Many students dressed up as Eric, but there were also a few Rachels, Owens; a couple Tates, Ryans, and Talias; and even a Bob. Cabin Butterfly came in first place, the Mykonos-Salt and Pepper collaboration came in second, Cabin Celeste came in third, and three people from Cabin Oceania received an honorable mention.
The conductors ordered mandatory rest during rest period, which sparked many outbursts of protest. While most people slept or sat in utter boredom, some members of Salt and Pepper defied orders to build a sophisticated fort.
During free time, many campers went down to the field for an epic game of capture the flag. In counselors vs. campers, the counselors narrowly won 2-1. At arts and crafts, meanwhile, Counselor Rachel led finger crotchet. Violet and Maddy from Camp Joyful Voices bonded at the crotchet table and Maddy made an 11-foot-long scarf. There was another awesome guitar circle today where Avi, Andrea, Maeve, Eliana, June, and Daniel worked together to create an awesome song about fruit salad.
Recital was excellent today because several mentors from Ensemble, including Oona, Makenna, Cooper, Keira, and Nola, performed amazing solos and earned the right to go to dinner first. The dinner of mac and cheese with chicken nuggets was particularly popular!
When rehearsals ended, it was time for Staff No Talent Night (AKA Surprise #2). Counselor Grace impressed everyone with her ability to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” with the lyrics shifted over. Then, Owen and Grace performed a skit about a pirate captain who always asked for his red shirt (and then finally his brown pants) when his ship was under attack. In Ryan and Catalina’s “Not My Arms,” Talia and Mia (sitting behind) blindly tried to feed them cereal with La Croix and apply makeup. For the “Synchronized Swimmers,” Rachel, Mia, and Owen donned bikinis and danced to the Blue Danube. After some other notable acts, such as the “Safety Dance” with Tate’s puppet Vlad, the “Dum Dum Song,” and a conducted improvisation with Jeopardy buzzers and a mix of unusual sound effects chosen by the audience, the grand finale was a hilarious Mad Libs version of “Give Us Hope.”
“Give us pie. My stretto is bamboozling. Can you sleepwalk? Climb in my prayers. Can you repel? My nose is stinking. Give us pie and we’ll eat you the way.”
One last bit of excitement that didn’t get mentioned was that Daniel lost a tooth!
