Day 2: Good Ol' Time in Old Town

For Day 2, singers woke up at 7:30 AM for a delicious breakfast buffet with many different food options. They gathered their energy and choir binders and walked to rehearsal. They were joined this morning by Earl Boss, a professional musician playing tenor saxophone. He improvised with the choir on Ani Mamin and No Time. The kids worked hard in their last rehearsal this tour to perfect their music for their very first tour concert this evening. As a reward for their focus and dedication, singers got to have pizza and free time at the hotel pool.

After a brief interlude of singing games as we waited for the bus, we headed off to Old Town San Diego. It is the oldest settled area in San Diego and is the site of the first European settlement in present-day California. Singers made candles, toured historic museums, checked out the ‘gem store,’ Gepetto’s Toy Store, and explored all that Old Town has to offer. We split into small groups for dinner, so everyone was able to choose what they wanted to eat.

Then we were off to All Souls Episcopal for our first concert. We were warmly welcomed by Dr. Rueben Valenzuela, Artistic Director of the Bach Collegium and old classmate of Mr. and Mrs. Brown. He even accompanied the choir on the organ for Lux Aeterna. People were impressed with the singer’s tone and musicianship - very impressive given the busy few days they have had. After a long day, the singers had a quiet bus ride back to the hotel for some much-needed rest. We can’t wait for tomorrow.
