Day Three - Trip to Guanajuato
Day three we awoke to another breakfast buffet at the hotel followed by a rehearsal for the kids. After rehearsal we had an early lunch of savory crepes, corn soup and homemade mango ice cream. We boarded our bus and set of for Guanajuato, the capital city of the state of Guanajuato and about 90 minutes from San Miguel. Guanajuato is a stunning hill town, much like a medieval city in Europe. We had to embark from our tour bus and squish into a smaller one because large vehicles are not allowed in the city. We took a short and quick tour of the city center. It was raining by now so picture the 45 of us in our ponchos, looking much like a wandering group of penguins. We learned of "kissing alley" where two opposing balconies were separated by 24 inches. As the story goes, on one side was a boy and on the other a girl. Much like Romeo and Juliet they were from opposing families, and after catching the kids kissing the father told the daughter if he caught her kissing the boy again he would kill her. The father did catch them kissing and stabbed her in the back, killing her. Married couples are told to kiss on the third step to the balcony for good luck.
We explored the local market of butchers, produce, trinkets, treasures, and all sorts of goodies. From here we split into groups, some wandering and shopping while a large group went to see a museum of Diego Rivera's house.
Dinner was a welcomed hamburger for most of the kids, in a very nice restaurant off the center square. After dinner we rocked the house with a singing of Anchor Bay!!
From here it was a quiet bus ride back to the hotel for down time and packing up to head out in the morning for Morelia.
